Beer in the Czech Republic

The Czech Republic has a long brewing tradition behind it. In these latitudes it is possible to taste a huge variety of hop and malt beverages. After all, all this should not surprise us too much: in the past, beer production was in fact linked to the presence of monasteries and the ancient wisdom of monks.

The first known beer made here was brewed as far back as 993, in the late 10th century. The task of brewing ended up being the exclusive preserve of Czech citizens, and within a short time every household had its own private brewery.

History of Prague’s first brewery

Pivnice U Fleku is a pub but more importantly a brewery, the oldest in all of Prague.

The first records about this small brewery date back to 1499. The ancient clock on the pub’s facade has become the symbol of this establishment.

The ambience inside the pub, as tradition dictates, is very rustic. In each of the 8 rooms in which you may happen to sit, the furnishings are not surprisingly made entirely from woodworking.

The tables are often very long and, as is the practice, you will have to share them with other groups. If you prefer, weather permitting, it will also be possible for you to sit outside.

It is often possible to watchlive performances by accordion players, local dancers and cabaret performers who daily delight patrons of the inn.

A special dark beer is served here-no other pub in Prague will let you taste it. It is brewed right in-house and is called Flekovsky Tmavy Lezák 13°. Often served along with local dishes in 40 cl mugs, it reaches a not excessively high alcohol content (5% vol). The price of this treat is barely higher than the cost of other competing varieties, but still moderate.

In light of all this allow us to make a small observation: whether it is your passion for beer, curiosity, chance or love of somewhat retro atmospheres and locations that drives you , you will have to go to this pub with the knowledge that you have set foot in a place to be considered in the same way as a tourist destination.

The U Fleku Museum

If you happen to sit at the tables of this pub, don’t miss the opportunity to pay a visit to the museum housed inside the old brewery. Not only will you get an up-close look at the world of Prague’s master brewers and the secrets of Flekovsky Tmavy Lezák 13th, but you can also buy quaint souvenirs, sample local specialties, and receive a free gift.

Not sure how to get to the brewery? You will have to get to Kremenkova Street 11, in Staré Mesto. You can do this on foot or by taking advantage of streetcar line 5.

What to eat

What are the restaurant’s specialties? U Fleku offers an authentic dining experience. Traditional dishes include a wide range of homemade soups, roast duck, and the world-famous flek-style goulash. This goulash is prepared with locally brewed beer, a truly delicious dish.
