However, coffee shops do not exist in Prague, despite the fact that soft drug regulations are quite permissive.

Is it legal to smoke pot in Prague?

The Czech Republic has shown in recent years that it takes a very liberal view of drug use.

However, this does not mean that it is safe to walk around with one or more doses of the drug.

If at a possible check the authorities found a small amount of pot in a tourist’s or citizen’s pocket, they could charge the unfortunate person with a misdemeanor.

The maximum penalty one would face in this case would be to be forced to pay a small fine.

When the limits on drug possession set by law are exceeded, the fine to be paid would be 600 euros and the substances in one’s possession would be promptly seized.

The amounts of drugs that one is allowed to carry may vary depending on the type of substance chosen but also on one’s status as a resident of Prague or otherwise in the city where the control took place.

The Czech Republic, by applying laws that are not very restrictive on the use of drugs, certainly does not intend to endorse their use. This choice is grounded in the idea thatby liberalizing soft drugs it can somehow decrease the number of crimes annually recorded in the cities.

In short, there will probably be far fewer crimes committed by those who try hard to plant doses or obtain them.

Leaving aside the case of therapeutic drug users in fact, those who should at a check turn out to be drug possessors would no longer have a clean criminal record.

Therefore, it does not matter in what quantity one carries marijuana, mushrooms or LSD: in any case, one would still be committing a crime.

Recreational use of cannabis is considered illegal in the Czech Republic

The decriminalization of marijuana possession in 2010 put the country in line with other European nations such as Italy, Germany and Spain, which tolerate small amounts of marijuana possession. However, Czech law still considers it a crime to possess marijuana over 15 grams unless it is for medical purposes.

Once legalized, cannabis will be available in pharmacies

According to Czech Drug Commissioner Jindřich Vobořil, once legalized, cannabis will be available in pharmacies and licensed dispensaries, with Czech municipalities able to decide whether to allow or ban cannabis stores.

Vobořil also expressed his intention to limit marijuana consumption through conventional smoking, pushing toward alternatives such as vaporizers and edibles, citing health concerns.

In 2021, Czech doctors prescribed 100kg of marijuana for medical use

The number of patients receiving medical marijuana prescriptions has increased significantly, with Czech doctors prescribing a substantial amount of medical marijuana in 2021. The Czech government also eased restrictions on medical marijuana in 2022, allowing a higher concentration of THC in the products.

23% of Czech youth have tried marijuana

A report by the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction indicates that a significant proportion of Czech youth have experimented with cannabis, ranking the Czech Republic first among European Union states for use of the substance.
