Temperature in Prague: Climate and Forecast (Season by Season)

What will be the temperature in Prague during your stay in the Czech capital? It might be best to read up on this before you leave. More or less prohibitive weather conditions indeed require different equipment. What will you need to pack then? Let’s find out together.

Prague’s climate, season by season

Prague is a hilly city in Eastern Europe. Its climate is continental, which means that on average the winters in such latitudes are long and unclement, while summers are at best warm and not infrequently rainy.

To witness the magical spectacle of snowfall one usually has to wait until mid-November, when temperatures plummet to zero despite the fact that it is still daytime.

Zero is unfortunately not the lowest limit touched by the mercury column. The coldest winters have been characterized in Prague by intense cold, what, in short, is felt when temperatures drop to as low as -20°C.

Rains, on the other hand, are mostly encountered during the good season, but for the rest of the year they are not that frequent or even overly intense.

Leaving for Prague: what to pack?

As with visiting any other city, one’s equipment will vary depending on the season chosen for departure.

In any case, since as we have seen it is not difficult to run into very cool days, it is perhaps best not to take excessively light clothing with you.

Let’s say we want to leave in the spring. Good choice.

From March to May, minimum temperatures are usually between 0°C and 8°C, and maximums between 8°C and 19°C.

In addition, during this time the weather conditions are often unstable but still optimal for successful tours and excursions.

The suggestion is to pack mixed clothing in this case that allows you to dress onion: half-sleeved shirts, light sweatshirts, windbreakers and down jackets in short will have to share space in your suitcase.

If, on the other hand, you go to Prague in the summer, the situation will be slightly different: from June to September the minimum temperatures will be in the 9-11°C range, the maximum in the 19-25°C range.

Again, onion-shaped clothing will be more than fine. During the day you will be able to walk around undisturbed in short sleeves, but in the evening a jacket or sweatshirt will always come in handy.

Starting at the end of September then you will most likely encounter rain and cloudy days, but it is not excluded that you will experience the so-called Indian Summer, that is, a new rise in temperatures.

The suggestion, again, is to pack light clothes and heavier garments to match as needed. However, add an umbrella and a raincoat: just in case.

Prague in autumn

Between October and December, temperatures are expected to fall further: lows can drop from 8°C to -3°C, highs from 16°C to 2°C.

However, this is a fantastic time to visit Prague, which at this stage almost seems to come straight out of a postcard. Therefore, orient yourself directly on something more opaque, on non-slip shoes and big boots, gloves and scarves, but do not prevent the cold from letting you enjoy this picturesque spectacle.

Prague in winter

Between January and February , minimums are expected to be around -4°C, maximums around 2°C.

Frosts and snowfalls will be frequent and cold weather will be a constant during your Prague stay.

Bring very heavy clothes, gloves, scarves, boots and a backpack in which to store the clothes you will inevitably take off as you enter well-heated public places.
